We are back from our event at Fitbloggin in Baltimore. It was a great time and we learned lots of new things :)Thanks to everyone who stopped by our table at the event and sampled our gluten free vegan raw goodies. Here are the holiday hours and farmers market news for Twin Cakes Bakery and Pure2Raw product line. We are currently not taking any more orders for the Thanksgiving holiday season

Carrboro Farmers Market news - we are still planning on selling there through the winter season on every Saturday from 9am- 12. Though we will be gone for a few weeks but will be back there selling on December 12th. Thanks!

Re-Cap of Chocolate Festival

Twin Cakes Bakery was a vendor at Chocolate Festival at NC State here in Raleigh. The chocolate festival was an event to raise money and bring awareness to breast cancer. We wanted to share with all of you what our day was like yesterday getting ready for the event. Lots of chocolate! We brought a variety of gluten free, vegan, soy free, corn free, peanut free and low glycemic products! Here is a snap shot of what we brought Now at the event... time to set up. Here is a snap shot of the room where all the food vendors will be set-up with lots of chocolate! Our table: Lori at our table Time to start plating all our goodies First our raw macaroons (chocolate and carob) Our raw chocolate truffles (they went fast) Our beautiful cupcake tower and chocolate banana muffins! Our double chocolate cookies and some raw chocolate truffles in the middle Michelle already to get to work - passing out our samples Final touches: putting on our aprons (thanks mom for making them) Here are the twins together all ready to start the event. (I was cold so I left my sweater on) :) It was a fun event...especially since it was surrounded with chocolate!! There were over 500 people, so yay for raising money for charity!! Well we this weekend Lori will be at Carrboro farmers market (7am to 12) as Michelle will be at Whole Foods Gluten free event (11-3pm) , so come out this Saturday and get yourself some gluten free vegan goodies!

Busy Busy Week

Hello everyone, Well many of you know that I have been here running the bakery while Michelle is at 105 degrees for her Raw Culinary Academy. She will be coming home soon... well actually I will be leaving here to go visit her for the last few days. 105 Degrees is going to be hosting a Live and Learn event on Oct. 3 which I am going to be attend. I am very excited! I wanted to share with all of you what I have been up to here at Twin Cakes Bakery - lots of orders and some new things at the farmers market. First it started with a little single layer vanilla blueberry cake for 1 year old Next some baby shower cupcakes for a little boy Next was Chocolate Princess Cake with chocolate cupcakes Than Lemon "monkey" Cake with lemon hot pink frosting and black polka dots with red velvet cupcakes (this cake and cupcakes contain soy) Than finally time to bake for farmers market. I brought some new items this week: New gluten free vegan items Chocolate chip raspberry muffin And blueberry apple muffins Some New Pure2Raw product line items: Raw Cinnamon Raisin Bombs - if you love cinnamon - you will love these! New item - raw brownie sandwiches - need I say more Another new item: Raw chocolate spiced truffles - these are to die for!!!! Than ended my very long week with another 1 year birthday cake: Double layer 6 inch chocolate cake with vanilla frosting Wow, is all I can say. Trying a new gluten free pizza crust recipe

Hello everyone, Last night we decided to try creating a new gluten free pizza crust recipe. The one we currently have at Twin Cakes Bakery is great and we love it though we wanted to try making one that can be a roll out. Also our current gluten free pizza crust is also vegan and yeast free, double bonus. You might be asking yourself why would we want to create another pizza crust if we already have one? Good question. The answer is we are just curious and we love to play around with recipes sometimes. It help makes our products better and us really understand our ingredients. The first trial pizza crust recipe ended up being great to roll out. Very nice, smooth non-sticky dough. Easy to roll out. Though when it baked the overall appearance was not the greatest. Looked really boring (to us at least). Though sometimes gluten free baking creations do not always turn our "pretty" even though they taste great. The crust rose alright. For the taste test for the first batch of pizza it tasted fine. Crust was pretty basic,not whole wheat tasting, good chew (maybe too much), and almost had too much of a starchy taste to it. But overall decent crust! This one we will keep playing around with till we get the thinner crispy crust pizza that so many customers of ours like. Here are some pictures of the gluten free pizza #1: The second trial pizza crust recipe was very similar to our current recipe because the main difference we did was add yeast to it instead of using baking powder. It was not a roll out like the first one. We ended up spreading it out with a spatula, which is how we do our current one that we love. Yea, it is a little bit more work but not hard. It rose nicely. For the taste test it tasted great. Soft, moist, and chewy. Just like a think crust pizza. So by adding the yeast did not really help in providing a "crunchy" texture pizza. Probably going to leave it as a yeast free pizza crust since it comes out already so nicely. Well we hope you enjoyed seeing our gluten free pizza crust trial recipes. We wanted to say thanks to everyone (especially our great customer base at Carrboro Farmers Market) who comes out and supports us at the farmers markets each week! Why the Gluten Free Twins bake the way we do

Hello everyone, We get the question asked a lot about why we started this company and why we use the ingredients we do in our products. Well, there is so much to say about this topic though I will try to make it short.

1) Why we started Twin Cakes Bakery?

We are so proud of our bakery from where we started to where we are now. And we have so many of our customers that have hung around to thank for that!! Twin Cakes Bakery started because both Michelle and I suffered from food allergies/sensitives (like gluten, wheat, dairy, soy, sugar, peanuts, corn) and we choose to be vegans (so no eggs too)! As well as our second oldest sister suffered from these food sensitives and never had anything to eat. We realized there really was not much baked goods let alone bakeries near by that we really liked let alone places where we could eat. And majority of your typical gluten free companies still use eggs, dairy, and/or sugar. As well as vegan companies can still use wheat flour and sugar. We really did not want any of that in our products! We went back and forth for awhile debating if we should start our very own bakery and finally decided we will. That is when our dream finally started. We took the leap! Our main goal was to create a "healthy bakery" that anyone could eat at especially those with food allergies. We wanted to be different from all the other gluten free and vegan companies out there. We wanted to show others that even if you are watching what you eat for dietary reasons or for health reasons you can find something here that will fit your needs! And do not have to feel guilty about. So, we took it upon us to create some delicious allergy friendly products. As time went by our product offering as continued to grow as well as what allergies we cover. We have met so many great customers and shared stories, struggles, achievements, and much more. We are not sure of what the future holds for our bakery though we do have many customers to thank of where we are today and we where could go in the future. There is so much more that we would love to do with our bakery in the products that we offer and the additional services we could provide. We are very excited for what might be around the corner for our little bakery.

2) Why these "alternative" ingredients?

First off we do not consider the ingredients we use as alternative or different. We view our ingredients as some of the most "healthy" ingredients available. We are always thinking of our customers health when we create a product. We want to make sure that our products are full of flavor and nutrition and contain no preservatives or unknown ingredients. You can spell and say all the ingredients in our products!!! We strive in making sure that the companies we buy from have the same attitude and that they are safe. Here is a list of the ingredients that we use in our variety of products: organic agave nectar organic coconut oil stevia organic olive oil organic vanilla (and alcohol free) sorghum millet amaranth quinoa potato starch tapioca arrowroot organic brown rice sweet rice organic coconut flour organic natural cocoa powder organic fruits (apples, blueberries, bananas, raspberries, lemon, limes, etc) inulin blackstrap molasses organic flax meal guar gum xanthan gum (corn free too) non-aluminum baking powder (corn free too) baking soda organic spices organic hemp milk organic coconut milk Over the next couple of months we will go into further detail of each of these ingredients. Thoughts about Celiac Disease Testing

Our older sister sent us an email earlier today discussing an email that was sent to her about getting the celiac disease genetic testing. She asked for our thoughts about this. So here we go... we have heard of the testing but have never really thought about getting it done. At least where we are in our lives we do not feel it is necessary. Though, we feel that one day in the future we will get the test done. For those of you who have kids or plan to you may want to think about getting this test done. There are different DNA test for the genes available that predispose to celiac disease. Options are either blood sample, saliva, or cells obtained by swabbing inside your cheek. The test will show you whether or not you have the genes that predispose to the disorder. If you have the DQ8 or DQ2 doesn't mean you have the disease - it means that you COULD develop a sensitivity to gluten. So makes you a high risk. According to University of Chicago Celiac Disease center - said if you are a first degree relative (parent, child, sister/brother) of a person with celiac, you have a 1 in 22 chance of developing the disease in your life. If you are a second degree relative (aunt, uncle, etc) your risk is 1 in 39. First and second degree relatives who have the genetic testing and find out that they have the genes can be checked regularly to help monitor the disease which helps with the early diagnosis. By finding out your diagnosis early can help reduce the risk of complications that come with the disease. Where to get tested: Genetic testing is available through most doctors. There are also take-home cheek swab kits as well. More insurance companies are covering the cost of the test, especially those who are at a high risk. You want the test to do both the alpha and beta subunits of HLA DQ. Though, Enterolab just does the Beta testing. So if you just curious and don't think you are a high risk, this test should be ok. Though, if you really want a more complete test than Kimball Genetics, LabCorp, and Prometheus Labs all do the testing. I feel that everyone would benefit in getting tested at some point in their life and depending on your family's background or where you are in your life. You may want to consider getting tested. I hope this information is helpful and helps you in your decision on whether or not to get tested.

Hello everyone We have been busy here at Twin Cakes... farmers markets, a few birthday orders, and a wedding. We sold for the first time this season at North Raleigh Farmers market on Wednesday from 4-7pm. Thank you who came out and picked up some gluten free vegan goodies. And thank you for supporting your locals.!! Here some cakes we had early in the week: Our very popular chocolate chip cookie cake that is gluten free, egg free, dairy free, casein free, soy free, peanut free, nut free, and low glycemic . We grew up with the Great American Cookie Cake as our birthday cake so when we no longer could eat gluten and dairy this was one of our first recipes to create. And boy does it taste good even better than we remember...warning it is very addicting!! Friday was a long day, which actually began Thursday night...just one very long day. We got about 3 hours of sleep but we were ready to go Friday morning. Now for the most exciting part of the week...the wedding. Thank you to Matthew and Jessie for letting Twin Cakes be apart of your special day. The wedding was at the beautiful Holden Beach, NC. Gluten Intolerance Group and Camp Kanata pictures

Well, Michelle and I have had a very busy week with orders and donating cakes to great causes! We are so happy to be apart of the GIG group and the Gluten free week at Camp Kanata. Here are some pictures of the cakes and cupcakes that we made for the events. Of course, we forgot to take pictures at the event. We put our cupcakes in our travel container, we wanted to make sure our cupcakes survived the 2 hour drive to Winston Salem. And yes, we got lost!!! But we eventually ended up making it to the GIG event. Here is Michelle icing up the cupcakes before I decorate them with our allergy friendly homemade fondant! Michelle and I drink a lot of coconut water. Some pure -straight from real coconut or from bottled coconut water. Though drinking coconut water straight from the natural source is the best, the bottled coconut water that you can find in Whole Foods or other natural health food stores is still as good. We recommend the brands ZICO or One. Since we are very active people we need to keep our bodies hydrated so that is why we drink coconut water at least once or twice a day. The twins encourage everyone to include more coconut and coconut water into their diets! Your body will be happy you did! Here are some benefits of drinking coconut water:

The other day we were watching our favorite morning news show, The Today Show, and saw a great segment on food allergies. They had a mother, Robyn O'Brien who quickly learned the importance of hidden foods and the concept of eating like the Europeans...eat fresh foods nothing in a package. We enjoyed Robyn's idea of eating less processed foods and how easy it can be to eat this way. Please check out this video and Robyn O'Brien's book "The Unhealthy Truth". Thank you to Robyn and the Today Show for bringing this topic up to the public. We hope this helps open the idea to eat fresh fruits and vegetables for your whole family so everyone can feel great. Not only is eating less foods out of a box is better for your health, but also great way to produce less waste and save the environment.

Celiac Disease Awareness Month

As many of you know May is Celiac Disease Awareness Month with the American Celiac Disease Alliance and many other foundations like the Celiac Disease Foundation. Though, the CSA association has their awareness month in October. We feel the more awareness out there the better! One of our favorite blogs is Gluten Free Raleigh. Zach does a great job with posting great information and discussions. Check out his blog if you have not already. So join in the discussions and get involved with helping to increase the awareness of Celiac disease everywhere. Everyone can do their part in helping. Here at Twin Cakes Bakery we are always trying to educate our customers with information and advice that has worked for us and from our research. At the Children's Hospital Boston has great information about Celiac. We enjoyed the article (under the tab called additional information) "Why Gluten Free Diets are Healthy for Non-Celiacs" to be very interesting! Because we feel that it is good for everyone to incorporate more gluten free food into their diets. Here are some quick facts about Celiac Disease:

Twin Cakes Bakery - Asthma Fair in Wake County

This Saturday, May 2, from 9am -1pm at the WakeMed Andrews Conference Center off New Bern Avenue in Raleigh there is going to be the 2009 Asthma Fair. More information about the event: The Wake County Asthma Coalition is hosting an Educational Asthma Fair in celebration of the World Asthma Day and Asthma Awareness Month. There will be free parking at the WakeMed Hospital Andrews Center. Families and asthmatic children and/or adults are invited to attend and learn how to take control of their Asthma. There will be lots of door prizes and variety of vendors there with samples, product information and educational sessions. It will be a great time. And Twin Cakes Bakery will be present at the event offering a variety of gluten free, vegan - allergy friendly products for all to try. We hope you can stop by. There is more and more discussions being done about the relationship between asthma and food allerigies, specially dairy, wheat and gluten. These are considered more of hidden triggers to asthma. There have been some studies that show a link between gluten sensitivity and asthma. From our findings there have been many individuals who had breathing issues and who cut out wheat and gluten from their diet starting seeing great improvements. What fats/oils we use in our gluten free and vegan baked goods

People are always asking us what ingredients we use in our products and why we use them. So, we are going to discuss some of our ingredients every week here on our blog. These week we are starting with our fats. The two main fats we use are olive oil and coconut oil (very occasionally we will use soy butter though usually done per customer request). In some of our raw products, our Pure2 raw line, we use cacao butter as well. We still believe in moderation with any fats, those we chose to use these fats over any other fat do the health benefits of them. Why do we use these fats? Extra virgin olive oil is derived from the first pressing of the olives and has the most delicate flavor and most antioxidant benefits Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fat, a type of fat that researchers are discovering has excellent health benefits. What is Cacao butter? It is what white chocolate is made out of. It contains no chemicals, no hexane and no solvents. Cacao butter goes great in dessert recipes or as skin moisturizer. Cacao butter is made by cold-pressing the organic Cacao nibs (which we will talk about at another post) into a "cake" in such a way that the oil begins to separate from the protein and fiber. It is one of the most stable fats known, containing natural antioxidants that prevent rancidity and give it storage life of 2 to 5 years. Future of Vegans... another reason to be vegan

There was a great article in the March/April 2009 edition of the VegNews magazine called "The Road to Vegetopia- (re)imagining the Future of Food". It has tons of great information and points that really make your think about things and makes you really appreciate being a vegan. The article discusses a lot about meat factories and farmers. It is really interesting and somewhat disturbing to find out what happens in the meat industry. One great point that we really liked and whated to share with all of you is...."animal agribusiness accounts for 18% of all greenhouse gasses --- a full 5% more than all of the world's cars, trucks, trains, and planes combined." Now if by knowing this doesn't make you consider cutting down on meat or cutting it out completely from your diet... ? The article also does a great job in describing how climate change, overpopulation, and food scarcity are all factors that are becoming more and more serious!! The rest of the article discusses how vegetarians and vegans are going to change the course of eating for the future.... which we are very proud to be apart of! Midtown Farmers Market - North Hills in Raleigh

Here are some pictures of last Saturday's first farmers market of the 2009 year! It was a lot of fun and great to see everyone again. It is going to be a great 2nd season. There are 35 vendors now at the Midtown Farmers market.... so there is plenty to choose from and have a great time meeting all the local farmers and crafters! 2009 Farmers Market Season starting...

The Twins would like to announce that the Spring 2009 Farmers market season is just around the corner. As you can see we are very excited for the new season, this is our second year of selling at local farmers markets. We hope that everyone will be able to come out and support us and the rest of the local farmers/crafters. We plan to sell at the Mid-Town Farmers Market (formally known as North Hills Farmers Market). The Mid-Town market time are from 8am to 12pm every Saturday starting April 11th. The location of the market is in the plaza in front of the movie theaters. Also, Twin Cakes bakery will be selling at the Hillsborough Farmers Market... the season has already started. We plan to start selling there this coming Wednesday, April 8th, it happens on every Wednesday from 4pm and 7pm. It's location is in the Home Depot parking lot. Remember if you have any special request or want to make a pre-order to pick up at the market please call us 919-306-5304. Thanks. We look forward in seeing everyone again! We have been playing in the kitchen and creating some news raw items to add to our menu. Raw food is living food which means the nutritional value of the food is maintained and enzymatic activity preserved by dehydrating below 115 degrees. Raw foods are primarily made up from fruits, vegetables, sprouted beans and grains, and nuts and seeds. Here at Twin Cakes we strive to create delicious raw food that taste amazing and everyone can enjoy the benefits of incorporating more raw food into their life. Since the farmers market season is coming very soon we wanted to have more raw product offerings for all to enjoy these yummy treats. Getting ready for Spring

Here at Twin Cakes we are getting ready for spring. We sure have been enjoying the nice weather we have been having here in Raleigh. Perfect weather for fruit smoothies!! We have been doing a mild cleanse to transition us into the spring season. We are looking forward to getting our fresh fruit and veggies from our local farmers. Exciting news... Twin Cakes creates gluten free vegan fondat icing!!!

Michelle and I wanted to share with you all that we have discovered how to make gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, egg free, sugar free fondant that actually taste great! Since we are always playing around in the kitchen and experimenting with new recipes and flavors we decided to try to make our own fondant. Actually, we were making a batch of our agave based frosting and made a mistake.... but that mistake turned into fondant!!! It is easy to mold and roll out!! It was a very exciting moment for us!!!! Now we can create even more beautiful cakes and cupcakes for our customers to enjoy! Here are some pictures of what it looked like: Now it still needs some tweaking, but pretty much perfect. And yes we had to use gluten free food dye to get that blue, that is probably the most food coloring we have ever used. We typically use natural ingredients for color. Though we wanted it to be blue so that it was close to our logo color.

Today, Twin Cakes was featured at the Cel-Kids event in Wake Forest, NC. We brought samples of gluten free and vegan bakery items. Items for samples were: mini blueberry muffins, biscuits, chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, chocolate chips cookies, pizza, and our famous Sandwich bread!! It was a pleasure meeting all the families at the event and for their time. We hope to be apart of the Cel-Kids program again. Cel-Kids Raleigh is a local support group for families who have children with celiac. It is a great program and the moms that are in charge are great! A new week - A new outlook - A new focus

We survived our mini cleanse this past weekend. Today we had a full day of drinking green smoothies to ease us off our cleanse. Eating liquid based forms of food is a good way to transition your body from coming off a cleanse, it makes it easier for your stomach to digest foods again. Michelle and I plan to take it easy this week with foods we incorporate back into our diets. We are trying smoothies all day on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with yoga and weight lifting and than simple raw meals on Tuesday and Thursdays on our running days. And the weekends probably will be a mix. We enjoy mixing up our food options and exercise options to keep our bodies guessing which helps us from not getting bored. We feel this works best for us, though we do change up our routines frequently (depending on how we are feeling). Just listen to your body, it will tell you what it needs. If you have any fitness or food questions regarding what the Raw GF Twins do - please let us know and we will try to help. We are more than happy to share our experiences and thoughts with you. One of the great benefits of having a Twin is that you have a cardio buddy. I encourage all of you to find a fitness buddy to work out with - to help you maintain your own fitness goals. Day two ....

Here it is more than half way through our second day of our cleanse and we are doing well We did have some fruit, but that is ok because the main reason why we did the cleanse was to give our body a break from everyday food in general. Our first day went well, we drank our lemonade drink and lots of water, went to the gym to lift and sit in the sauna. We like to sit in the sauna when doing cleasnses becuase we feel the sweat really helps push out all our toxins. It has been nice doing this cleanse because it has really helped clear up both of our minds. We have been motivated to get organized and did some early spring cleaning! It has been great! I feel more focused and motivated to get back to business. Michelle and I mainly do these mini cleanses just for that purpose, to get re-focused and energized to move forward. I highly recommend everyone to try to do a cleanse every so often to give your body a break. It doesn't have to be anything too extreme. You can just eat fruit all day long if you wanted to. We feel the point is to help get your body back to normal and give it a break of eating food. Your bodies do need some breaks too; and the bonus part is that it helps you mentally feel clear and alive. Cheers to good health and a happy life.

Time to Cleanse again

As you all know Michelle and I did a little mini cleanse awhile back. Well, now we are doing it again because we just felt like our bodies needed a break from everything. Even though we eat majority raw foods --- we feel that your body still needs a break from digestion, etc. We have started it today and plan to do the cleanse for 3 days, we might go longer depending on how we are feeling. We are doing the Master Cleanse again (lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne, and lots of water) we seem to like this one the best because it is so simple and actually taste good compared to other cleanses. We both are excited to do this cleanse again and really want to feel the changes in our bodies and our mind. We have been very busy lately with our company and creating new and improved products! Which to us is always a great thing! We love what we do and are excite to continue to share our delicious goodies for all to enjoy. Stay tuned.

Survived our long weekend in Florida

Well our Gators won!! We are the National Champs!!! Go Gators. It was a great game. It was a late night...we did not get to bed till 2am Friday morning. We managed to get up a few hours later...at 7am...to get back in the car to drive back up to Orlando for the Disney half marathon. After a slight mishap with directions, we made it to our hotel...the Contemporary. The whole drive up to Orlando we were all re-hydrating with coconut water and snacking on our raw treats to keep us going. Yum...raw chocolate chip cookies...raw cranberry orange fig balls....raw brownies...raw cinnamon apple cookies After we registered for our race and did a bit of shopping at the Expo, my sisters and I had a lovely dinner at the restaurant in our hotel called the Wave. We all enjoyed an avocado orange salad with a side of steamed carrots. Perfect meal to end a long day and to only get up early to run/walk 13.1 miles. Disney was very nice to tolerate our gluten free dairy free request. This was our oldest sister, Carrie's, first half marathon. We all were so excited for her to experience the thrill of racing. We all laid out our outfits and food for race day and got to bed around 9:30pm, after watching the fireworks at the Magic Kingdom, which we watched in the privacy our balcony. Gotta love Disney!! 2:45am came quick...none of us felt we slept...but that was okay the excitement of the race took over. We all got dressed and enjoyed a small cup of coffee with a slice of raw date fig coconut bar. Then we were off the start line. We caught the last monorail out of the Contemporary at 4am that took us to Epcot. It was chilly... We stood in line with about 21,000 other racers. Then fireworks went off at 6am and the race started. The race was fun...taking pictures...being with the sisters...and of course being at the happiest place on Earth...Disney. The finish line was in sight and we all crossed it together and got our Donald Duck medals. We all look forward in doing it all again next year...will you??

We made it to Orlando

Well, Michelle and I survived our 10 hour drive down to Orlando to meet up with our older sister. It is was tough since we only got 3 hours of sleep, but we survived through having our raw fruit and veggie smoothies and some cupcakes. And lots of water. Plan to stretch our legs tonight with a walk and than a run in the morning. Got to keep the legs lose. We stopped by the local Whole Foods to get some more veggies, raw snacks and coconut water (our favorite to rehydrate our bodies) for us the next couple of days. Our journey does not stop tonight, but continues tomorrow. We are heading to Miami to see the Florida Gators play in the BCS Championship football game tomorrow night! Than returning back to Orlando on Friday to get some rest before a very earlier morning on Saturday for the race. So lots of good food and water to keep us --- gf raw vegan twins moving.... Who says you can not survive just off water, fruit and veggies and a few sweets of course!!!! We are proof that you can!!!

Final Countdown to Half Marathon for the Twins

As most of you already know we are running in our 2nd Half-Marathon down in Orlando, Florida at Disney. This is our third race at Disney we did our first half marathon back in 2006 and our first full marathon last year. Our second oldest sister had convinced us again to do another race so we decided to do the half marathon again this year of 2009. So, over this past few months we have been training for this race and now the final days are here. The marathon is this Saturday! We are very excited because all the hard work and dedication will soon pay off. Michelle and I are very competitive individuals and love to workout so marathons are great for us. I wish everyone would take the challenge of doing a half or full marathon once in their lives. It is a great feeling when you cross that finish line with everyone cheering you on. You really feel like you can do anything (well, which everyone can -- if you put your mind to it). We plan to do a better job this year of documenting more of our fitness tips as well as health and food tips. You all know that we are gluten free raw vegans who have a strong passion to help spread the word of health and fitness through better eating habits and working out. I promise it is not as bad as it sounds. Working out can be fun! We will keep everyone posted these next few days and how the race day goes... stay tuned.

Twin Cakes is our bakery that focuses on providing healthy desserts that are gluten free, peanut free, soy free, and vegan. We survived

Well we survived our two day cleanse. Boy was it hard, especially when you are cooking and baking goodies for people. But it was worth it to give our bodies digestive systems a break before all the holiday meals. Although, we do recommend you venture into the cleansing world at your own pace and do only what you body can handle. There are books about the Master Lemonade Cleanse, and they are worth checking out. Most people do it for 10 days or longer. We did it for 2 days as our last detox step from going RAW, so please do what is right for your body.

We had a small green smoothie this morning, and so far feel good. Over the two days of the cleanse we both were very lethargic, and now with just a little bit of food we feel so much more awake. Wow! The body is surely an amazing thing, so isn't it a good idea to take care of it?? We think so. You only got one body and one life so treat it nicely and it will return the favor. As you can see we strongly believe in the bodies natural ability to heal itself. I hope everybody has a wonderful holiday season and remember the twins motto: beauty, balance, bliss. Try to enjoy the holidays by eating smartly and never tell yourself no because then you will crave it more. So keep it simple and enjoy everything in small amounts! You will be glad you did. End the year right with trying to limit your intake of cheese, meat, and sugar filled desserts and indulge in more naturally things from the earth -- fruit, veggies, and seeds. Time for a Cleanse - Master Cleanse

Well, since it is getting closer to the holidays Michelle and I decided to do a "mini" cleanse to help clean out our systems! We are doing the Master Cleanse - which is made up of lemon juice, water, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. This is our first day of it. (We got the cleanse idea from one of the books we just finished and love -- Eating for Energy by Yuri Elkaim) But before the cleanse we have been eating mostly green smoothies and salads for the past month which we just love. We crave our smoothies and salads all the time. This is our new focus- eating RAW foods. We absolutely love it! Since the body is a great machine it is up to us to take care of it and why not a better way to do that than through pure, organic raw uncooked foods. Back to the cleanse - it is going ok so far. It is one of the easiest and better tasting cleanses that we have done (and we have done quite a few). We dare all of you try to this cleanse like us for two days and see how you feel. The positive thing about the cleanse is that it gives your body a break from "digesting" and time for it to detox. A friend of mine passed this article onto me from Bottom Line Secrets and I wanted to share it with all of you (their website is www.bottomlinesecrets.com). The article was written the first of October and it provided its readers with tips on how to save money. One point the article mentioned was that by limiting portions of food, eating leftovers and storing food properly can save around $1,500 a year!! If you need tips or advice on food storage, what to do with leftovers just give the twins a call. According to the US Department of Agriculture an estimated 25% of edible food that is purchased by Americans goes to waste!!! My sister and I are strong believers of balance and portion control of your food. Also, by eating more fresh food everyone will create less waste due to the foods consumed are not out of a box! By doing this you are doing your part in helping the environment and saving some money for yourself! I recommend every one to start eating more local produce and fresh organic food as much as possible... your bodies will thank you for it. Another good point from the article is ... to eat lower on the food chain. (Michelle and I are big believers on this topic -since we are raw/vegans).I am sure you all know by now that it takes more energy and money to eat foods high on the food chain, such as beef or poultry. I could talk about this topic for forever, but my main point here is to try to decrease the amount of meat you eat in your diet. Our bodies don't necessarily need all the meat to survive or to be healthy. Also, by eating less meat you could likely save 20%, or about $1,200 on your annual food budget.... which we all can benefit from. Again, these are just some points that I wanted to share with you all about how to save money and the environment through your food choices. There is plenty of information on these topics and more ways to save on money. I hope that this information is useful and maybe everyone will start to try some of these new things! Your body, mind, soul, and our planet will thank you for it.
